At the American Academy of Audiology’s Annual Conference 2018 in April, the Academy announced it’s collaboration with the hearX Group on the launch of hearScreen USA™—the first mobile comprehensive hearing screening application in the U.S. By using the free app (available on iOS and Android), the public will be able to test their hearing and unlike any other app, it will also link to the closest audiologist, if a hearing problem is detected using geolocation.

The hearScreen USA app will revolutionize access in the hearing health industry across the U.S. by leveraging the current use of smartphone users (estimated by Statista at 224.3 million in 2017.) Based on technology developed by the University of Pretoria, South Africa, the app provides accurate detection of hearing loss in under three minutes.

“We look forward to the launch of the hearScreen USA app in October and believe in the value the mobile application will bring to both the public as an awareness tool as well as to audiologists through creating greater recognition of hearing loss” says Jackie Clark, Ph.D. president of the Academy.

The hearScreen USA™ app, available on most smartphones, will be officially launched at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. on October 10, 2018, at 09:30 a.m. The launch event will boast several influential speakers including a keynote address from Shilo Harris as well as audiology experts. The event is open to the public and is free.

Shilo Harris, who will be speaking at the event, served in the military and was deployed to Iraq in February, 2007, when Harris’ armored vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. The IED explosion injured the driver and ended the lives of three of his fellow soldiers. Shilo survived, but with severe third-degree burns. The severity of the burns meant the loss of Shilo’s ears resulting in severe hearing loss. Shilo has since become a motivational speaker, sharing his story with groups around the country andraising awareness about the affects of hearing loss.

If you would like to attend the event, please R.S.V.P. to info@hearscreenusa.com . Further details will follow the R.S.V.P.
